Cerqua Rivera Dance Theatre - Jubilation- Feb 19, 2011

I wasn't sure what to expect from CRDT at the Athenaeum Theater in Lincoln Park, but what I got was an amazing show. Jubilation appropriately celebrates and honors February's Black History month with amazing choreography by artistic director & co-founder, Wilfredo Rivera. The jazz/blues/gospel music by the CDRT Orchestra, lead by Stu Greenwood, was simply incredible. If I didn't know or understand the significant contribution to music made by Jazz legend Miles Davis when I arrived, I certainly did by the end of the night. Vocals were provided by two of Chicago's well known artists, Joe Cerqua, CRDT co-founder and producing director; and Bobbi Wilsyn, an amazing vocalist and ensemble member. The special guest of the evening was renowned ragtime pianist and composer, Reginald R. Robinson.

Lastly, the evening would not have been complete without the fantastic prowess of the CRDT dancers: Nicole Sebastian Betts, Nebi Berhane, Christina Chen, Dustin Crumbaugh (formerly of Luna Negra DT), Andrea Deline, Kate Dempsey, Luke Joiner, Joshua Pawelk, and Raphaelle Ziemba. I was simply amazed with their talent. To quote Kevin Holt, CRDT Managing & Marketing Director : "Cerqua Rivera Dance Theatre (CRDT) uniquely fuses contemporary dance, live music and visual art with programs that express the stories of American diversity, creating work both thought-provoking and accessible". I only wish that more people had been able to see CDRT perform last night.
