Lar Lubovitch Dance Co- Fall 2010

The Fall 2010 dance season is off to a great start esp. with the return of the LLDC. I went to their 9/23/2010 Program B performance where for a 2nd time, I felt myself fall into a sort of "trance dance" hypnosis during the opening, North Star and final piece de resistance, Calvalcade. What makes some of Mr Lubovitch's cor. appear hypnotizing is that it has a similar effect to watching an aquarium, or if you dive it's like hovering at depths of 15-40 ft watching aquatic vegetation and sea life being gently swept back and forth by the current. It involves appreciating the beautiful symmetry and cohesion as everything in the immediate area follows or flows in the same pattern and is not rushed; it can be very hypnotizing.

North Star (1978) is supposed to be very geometrically designed with the one member acting as an arm, back or leg. The rest of the ensemble is supposed to represent that movement on a larger scale so they were usually intertwined. What I like most about the cor. was seeing the cast do neoclassical or contemporary ballet.

Dogs of War (2010) danced by Christopher Vo & Attila Joey Csiki was amazing; it was about 2 enemy soldiers fighting on the battlefield and the contrast between wanting to kill your enemy yet respecting his and your own humanity as well.

Nature Boy: Kurt Elling (2005) featured Christopher Vo & Ensemble performing more amazing cor. as well as 3 very sultry and seductive duets. My favorite duet was btw Katarzyna Skarpetowska & Brian McGinnis. I recall the couple sitting in front of me to my right getting real hot and heavy with their own PDA during the duets. Not surprisingly, they left the theater right after that. Interestingly, one half of that couple is a young physician employed at my hospital. I'm still debating whether or not to tease him about it.

Calvalcade (1980) was awesome and contained the sort of classic Lar Lubovitch circular cor. that I have come to love and appreciate as it was performed by the ensemble. It reminded me of Men's Stories (2000).
